Sneaker Cake- A Runaway Success!

First off- thanks to those of you who left me encouraging comments when I posted part-one about making this cake. I appreciate your comments so much!

Although I could imagine the blob of cereal treats turning into something resembling a shoe, imagination and reality are often two very different things. And To be honest, I had my doubts that this cake would really turnout. I felt like there was a real good chance I'd need to put "plan B" (whatever that was) into place.

But I worked slowly and carefully, had some help from my sister, and luckily a really good week with my dizziness. And the cake was finished pretty much exactly as planned.

I could not be happier with the way the sneaker turned out.

The shoe held up just fine once the weather dried out (and funny enough ended up being the same size as my hubby's actual sneaker)!

The shoebox was straightforward and covered with fondant before I knew it.

In fact it went together so fast I ended up putting some extra painted details on it and adding custom label with The Mister's birthday vitals and a "Happy Birthday" message.

It's such a great feeling to step back from something you weren't sure you could do- take a look at it and realize that you've not only met, but actually exceeded your expectations.

Best of all The Mister loved it!

And I have to admit, after not being sure how this cake would turnout, it felt really good to have people say "I thought it was a real shoe". LOL

And just in case there are a few people who still have a hard time with the sneaker being a cereal treat (Auntie Pam). LOL : )

It really is... here's the proof!

  7. Thanks Marji- what a nice comment! I've made 2 cakes before and also decorated a store bought sheet cake. But I have never done any sculpting and covering of cereal treats in fondant like this.

  13. Aww, thanks SO MUCH for the comments!

Kathryn and Crafterzdelights- no higher compliment than to have "fooled" you into thinking it was an actual shoe. Thanks!

Play Eat Grow-Getting the mesh was actually one of the hardest parts to figure out. I intended to create the pattern by imprinting texture onto the fondant using a kitchen mat that had a similar pattern as the shoe. I was sure it would work... but when I rolled it over the fondant it barely made a dent.

I tried over and over again but could only get a very light texture. Ultimately I decided to go with it and covered the sneaker with white and started adding the other colors.

I was close to finished and still not happy with the look of the show when I realized it was because you couldn't really see the mesh texture. It was never going to look right without that texture but I couldn't rip off all the fondant and start again...

So I studied the shoe a while and thought I might be able to paint the texture using diluted food coloring (food coloring and vodka) like a water color paint wash.

I tested it on a small scrap of fondant and liked the look so I painted "mesh" all over the cake.

And it actually ended up being one of my favorite parts of the shoe!

  14. OMG! I immediately enlarged one of the images so my sweetie could see it from across the room. His words: "that is incredibly awesome"

I can't top that! Except to say - YOU are brilliant!

I am happy to follow your lead into cookie icing flooding - but I am equally happy to stand back and watch in the face of such talent as it took to make this totally cool cake!!

  17. This is unbelievable! I was fooled at first too! I have been wanting to attempt a sneaker cake for my best friend who is a runner. Wish me luck! Maybe you can send me your confidence on this one though. Yikes! Painting mesh? Not sure I have that in me. LOL. If you have any pointers to share or more of a tutorial you could pass along I'm sure there are many people out there that would benefit from it. Even your krispy sculpture is perfect. THanks in advance and thank you so much for posting this. It really is a work of art. One I'm sure was hard to cut into!
