Felt Carrots for Easter

I'd originally meant to include these carrots as part of the big felt food set I made my nephew for Christmas, but I ran out of time and didn't get to them. Which turned out to not be so bad after all because these really were the perfect thing for Easter.

I made three versions of carrots (whole, cut-apart, and sliced) because I really wanted to give my nephew a whole range of play options (everything from paying grocery store to cooking a finished meal).

First I made the whole carrots. They were really fast and easy- just a cone of orange felt and some green leaves.

After that I tried making the cut-apart versions. It's basically the whole carrot with the cone cut in thirds. I've never done cut-apart food before, but though it'd be fun to try. It was a little tricky at first (the hardest part was sewing on the tiny pieces of hook and loop) but after a while I got the hang of it.

Then I made a bag of slices.

The slices were by far the most tedious of all the versions to sew. And they didn't look exactly right to me- until I added a little fabric paint in the center of the circle to mimic a carrot's core.

But I really love how the bag came together, it was easy to sew, and I had fun creating the the label with fabric paint. I also added some hook and loop to the opening of the bag to keep all the slices in.

  1. So cute, all of them! I wonder if velcro would work for the cut up pieces...guess it would be too hard on the felt, though. They really look real.

    1. Thanks Egretta! The scratchy side of the velcro would have stuck to the felt but it did tend to chew it up so I opted to attach both sides of the velcro... but it was hard to stitch those little pieces.

  2. Now you have to make some peas, LOL! The carrots look great and so life-like. Your Nephew must have the best play food around!

I love this, is there a tutorial for this? On the pea idea I would use clay as I can't imagine trying felt for them. Love your blog.
