Edible Sparklers

Looking for something cute, edible and REALLY simple to make for the 4th of July? Well... how about these Sparkler pops.

I made them using marshmallows and these new sugar sheets from Wilton.

(By the way this is not a sponsored post or anything- I just wanted to try this new product out and it seemed like it would work perfectly with my idea for fireworks.)

Here's what you'll need to make them:
  • Marshmallows (standard size).
  • Sugar sheets in whatever colors or patterns you like. (I used blue and the stars pattern)
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Coconut
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Black sanding sugar
  • About 1-2 Tablespoons of frosting. (a small tube of the decorator stuff would be prefect)
  • Kitchen scissors (craft knife or pizza cutter works too)
  • Plastic sandwich bag
  • And a small dish of water
Start by tinting a few tablespoons of coconut yellow.

I followed the directions on the back of my coconut package which said to dissolve a few drops of food coloring into a teaspoon of water. Place your coconut in a sealable plastic bag. Pour the coloring over it and toss in the bag until the color is distributed evenly. Then I placed the coconut on some parchment paper and set it aside to dry.

Next put your marshmallows onto the sticks. I used 2 and 3 per stick (but I really thought 2 worked out the best for both proportion and serving size).

Push them down past the top of the stick so there is a "fuse" left at the top.

Now it's time to use the sugar sheets. I wound up really loving this star pattern. In the store I had my concerns about it being too light but was pleasantly surprised when I opened it up. The color turned out to really be more of a gold instead of the yellow shown on the package. It was very bright and bold- perfect!

My other impressions of these sheets- They were very easy to use. But a bit difficult to get out of the package. Maybe I was nervous about bending them too much. But I think they could use an 1/8th of an inch more on either side so it's easier to get them out (and back in for storage) without mangling the corners.

Ok back to the tutorial- Once the sheet is out peel it off it's backing and flip it over.

Do a rough measurement of how high and long a piece you'll need. To do this hold the pop at the edge of the sheet mark where the top of marshmallow hits (I used the back of a butter knife to slightly indent the sugar sheet). Then roll the pop along the sheet until you've gone all the way around to where you started- this how long a piece you'll need. Mark that with a little indent at the top of your marshmallow too.

Now using kitchen scissors cut along the top edge of where your marshmallows would be until you get to your second mark. You'll end up with a flap roughly as high and hopefully as long as you'll need.

Put a tiny bit of water on the tip of your finger and run that along the edge of your sheet.

Place your pop so it's lined up and start rolling. Mid way through add another line of water and keep rolling.

When you get to the end where the edges will meet up cut the flap off. Add another line of water and roll the edge of the sugar sheet into place.

All wrapped up it's already looking like a firework!

On the larger fireworks I made blue stripes by cutting little strips of the sugar sheet and wrapping them on top of the star sheet the same way as above. Be careful that you don't use too much water. Very little is needed to make the sheet stick and it gets too wet the blue dye will
drip and stain the white sheet below.

The last thing to do is to make the "fuse" look more like a firework.

The lollipop stick will be very sticky from the marshmallows. I used that to my advantage and rolled the end in black sanding sugar.

Then used a little bit of frosting to "glue" coconut on for that sparkler effect.

I happened to have some leftover frosting. But if you don't you could use one of those tiny little tubes of decorator frosting you get in the baking isle at the grocery store. Or even mix up a little "paste" using confectioner's sugar and water. You don't need very much at all so it's not worth buying or making a whole batch of frosting unless you need it for something else.

  4. Good question Michele! They taste yummy- just like marshmallows actually- And if you wanted to flavor them a bit more (I personally will eat marshmallows just as they are I love them) you could put a flavored frosting or chocolate between the stacked marshmallows.

    Erin what a great Idea! I bet you could use either swiss rolls or something similar. I wonder if you'd have to put them into the freezer for a few minutes to make them a stiffer consistency (like marshmallows). They might be hard to wrap while getting them to stay on the lollipop stick otherwise.

    If you try it I'd love to know the results!
