New Polymer Clay Technique?

I don't know if anyone else has ever tried this with polymer clay but a few years ago I was trying to make a detailed leaf shape and wasn't happy with my hand formed try.

I didn't have a mini cookie cutter in the shape I needed. But I did have a paper punch and figured I'd give it a try!

It worked beautifully and ever since I've been able to make fantastic fall leaves (not to mention lots of other detailed clay shapes) using my paper punch collection.

  6. Amazing! I never would have thought of that!! Is it easy to keep your punches clean for using again on paper, or do you keep these punches strictly for clay?

  7. I have a bunch of these punches and never, ever thought of this! You are amazing, and those leaves are darling. You could make jewelry of all kinds with this clever idea. I have used rubber stamps with clay and it works well but you still have to cut them out.

  8. Fabulous idea! How thin would you have to roll the clay?

  9. Dawn- I've found it's easy to keep the punches clean. I typically punch through a scrap bit of paper after using the clay to be sure nothing is stuck in there. If needed I flip the punch over (while it's pressed down) use use something like a toothpick to get out any stubborn clay- but this usually isn't necessary.

Mrs C. Great Idea, using stamps! I've just added a few of those stamp/punch all in ones to my punch collection. I wonder if these will work on clay then! It would be fabulous to get the shape and some stamped details all in one.

Jane O- I roll the clay just thin enough to easily slide it into the paper punch. They give you a fair bit of room in a paper punch- much thicker than your standard card stock sheet.

  12. Wow, that's amazing! As another commenter has said, I've used rubber stamps before, especially background ones, to great effect. But WOW... now I have visions of combining the two ideas swirling in my head. How exciting!

  13. Yoonie- I've been wondering if this would work with fondant too. I've been curious about what type of metal is used in the punches and if they are food safe or not.

Betsi- Now that I know stamps work well I have visions of new combos too!!

  17. This works with both raw clay and thin sheets of baked clay, so lots of possibilities. If you have trouble with the raw clay sticking dust the punch with a little corn starch. And punching the baked sheets is a little easier if the clay is still a bit warm.

I've also punched raw clay with a die cut machine (a Sizzix specifically). I put a super thin sheet of clay between two sheets of parchment. I could not see any problems the dies (i was nervous about the clay getting stuck) I would not do this without adding the protection of the paper.
